Uganda’s victory represents the country’s first appearance in an ICC World Cup event, making them the fifth African country to compete in the renowned T20 World Cup.
Uganda’s journey through the T20 World Cup Africa Region Qualifiers showed their determination and intent. The Cricket Cranes began their campaign with an eight-wicket win over Tanzania, setting a positive tone for the qualifiers.
Uganda rebounded magnificently after suffering a setback in the next game against Namibia, where Namibian all-rounder David Wiese’s superb effort resulted to a six-wicket defeat.
A vital five-wicket victory over Test-playing Zimbabwe, highlighted by outstanding contributions from Riazat Ali Shah and Alpesh Ramjani, represented a huge upset in the cricketing landscape.
Uganda sustained their winning streak with victories against Nigeria and Kenya, solidifying their position for T20 World Cup qualification. A convincing nine-wicket win in their last game over Rwanda secured their place in the coveted event.
However, following losses against Namibia and Uganda, Zimbabwe felt disappointed to miss out on the T20 World Cup for the second time in a row. Despite a remarkable triumph over Pakistan in the previous edition of the tournament, Zimbabwe failed to secure a spot in next year’s event.
