As the ICC World Cup 2023 approaches its final stages, Pakistan’s team director, Mickey Arthur, is going above and beyond. In an unusual move, he requested “divine help” to lead Pakistan’s progress through the competition.
The team just defeated Bangladesh and New Zealand in back-to-back victories, renewing their campaign.
Pakistan’s comeback coincided with the return of starter Fakhar Zaman, who went out with a knee injury.
Zaman made an incredible comeback against Bangladesh and New Zealand, hitting 81 and a blistering 81-ball 126 not out respectively. His outstanding performance became “game-changing” for Pakistan.
Pakistan is in a do-or-die position after eight points in 8 games so far.
To qualify for the semi-finals, they must not only beat England in their upcoming encounter in Kolkata, but also hope that New Zealand loses to Sri Lanka in Bengaluru or that the match is called off.
Afghanistan is also fighting for a semi-final position, depending on the results of their remaining matches.
Arthur expressed his optimism and conviction in Pakistan’s possibilities, saying, “Who knows how we’ll go in this competition?”
I have a gut feeling we’ll make it to the semi-finals, but we’ll have to wait and see. What we do know is that we will have it by Saturday.”
Mickey Arthur praised Fakhar Zaman’s contribution to the team’s success. “Fakhar became incredible since he arrived.”
“He (Zaman) changes games whenever he bats,” Arthur said, emphasizing the importance of having Fakhar Zaman in peak form. The longer he Bats, the stronger we dominate.”
Despite England’s problems, Arthur underlined the importance of Pakistan delivering their best effort against England. “Let’s hope we are saving ourselves for a batting, bowling, and fielding performance against England, and then what will be, will be,” he went on to say.
If Pakistan advances to the semi-finals, they would most likely face arch-rival India in Kolkata on November 16, with a place in the final at stake.
